262,000 dated records — ancient genomes, radiocarbon dates, cities, roads, languages — on one globe, across 300,000 years. The points are evidence. The arcs are inference, and the atlas keeps the difference visible.
Points are records. Each is a published, dated, georeferenced record; click one for its citation.
Arcs are inference. They connect a clade to its parent. A clade's date is its oldest sampled member, not when it arose, so every clade is older than the atlas can show.
Two placements disagree. Centroid and oldest-sample positions give different routes; the gap between them is how much the route depends on the statistic rather than the data.
Empty is not absent. Where the timeline's sediment thins out, nobody has dug or sequenced there yet. The Sources tab has the full coverage chart.
Journeys fly themselves. The Lineages tab lists routes from the textbook tree; the camera follows each one through time. Press play with any lineage selected and it follows that one too.
